FAQs

I’m new to this….what do I do first?

Congratulations for deciding to learn more about this exciting sport!  If you have never shot before, NRA’s Basic Pistol Course or one-on-one private instruction are great ways to become familiarized with shooting and gain the fundamentals.  If you are looking to brush up on your skills or are a shooter who never had any formal training in the fundamentals, NRA’s Basic Pistol Course or one-on-one private instruction will bring you up to speed on your fundamentals and improve your skills.  If you consider yourself a well-practiced shooter who wants to learn more about defending yourself and your family inside your home, Home Firearm Safety and Personal Protection in the Home will address your personal defense needs.

Do I need any special safety equipment?

Shooting is a loud sport with the possibility of eye injury due to casing ejection and muzzle flash. Students taking classes with range time must provide their own eye and ear protection or make arrangements with Phoenix Firearms Training to provide same prior to the start of their course.  Students must also wear a billed cap and shirt with snug collar to prevent the entry of hot brass into sensitive areas.

In addition to the course fee, do I need to pay for anything else?

Students are responsible for fees in addition to the course fee. These can include:

  • range fees,
  • ammunition,
  • firearm rental, and
  • course materials.

Students may provide their own ammunition and firearm. Student-owned firearms must be unloaded and cased when transported to training. Students can rent firearms from the range or Phoenix Firearms Training, Ltd. Supplemental course materials are needed for every NRA course – their costs vary with the course. Any supplemental fees will be discussed prior to the start of every course to limit ‘surprise costs’ for our students!

I’m an Illinois resident…do I need a FOID card?

Illinois residents must have a valid FOID card prior to the start of any training with Phoenix Firearms Training, Ltd. Students must be at least 10 years old and, if under the age of 18, accompanied by a parent.

What do I do now that concealed carry passed in Illinois?

Phoenix Firearms Training, Ltd., has been approved by the Illinois State Police to offer the requisite concealed carry training.  Please check our Training Calendar for available course dates.  We have configured the training into two main segments – Part I will take place in Mt. Prospect, IL.  Part II will take place at an outdoor range facility in Eagle, WI or an indoor range in Elgin, IL.  The IL CC Update course takes place at an indoor range in Elgin, IL.  We look forward to training law-abiding citizens in the State of Illinois to carry concealed firearms.  Contact us for further information.

Safety

The most important concept in firearms training is safety. While we strive to keep training interesting and fun, unsafe practices will not be condoned.
