Personal Protection In The Home
Pre-requisite: 21 years old with proof of shooting experience.
Students take this course to learn how to safely and efficiently use a handgun to protect themselves and families inside their homes. Students also learn about the law-abiding person’s right to self-defense. This 8 hour course takes place in the classroom and at the range where students will shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
Learning objectives include:
- basic defensive shooting skills,
- strategies for home safety and response to violent confrontation,
- firearms and the law,
- selecting a handgun for self-defense, and
- opportunities for skill development.
Course materials include:
- NRA’s Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook,
- NRA’s Gun Safety Rules brochure,
- Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Booklet, and
- a course completion certificate.
Acceptable proof of shooting skills includes:
- demonstration of basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing a firearm, and cleaning a firearm to the instructor,
- NRA Basic Pistol Course certification,
- NRA FIRST Steps Course certification,
- NRA Pistol Competitive Shooting Qualification card,
- military DD214 w/ pistol qualification,
- passing a pre-course assessment, or
- the discretion of the firearms instructor.
