FIRST Steps Rifle Orientation

Students take this course to receive a hands-on orientation to the safe handling of one specific rifle action type.  This course is at least 3 hours long and consists of 4 students or less.  Students will spend time in the classroom and at the range.

Learning objectives include:

  • NRA’s rules for safe gun handling,
  • the particular rifle model parts and operation,
  • discussion of ammunition,
  • shooting fundamentals,
  • cleaning the rifle, and
  • continued opportunities for skill development.

Course materials include:

  • NRA’s Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook,
  • NRA’s Gun Safety Rules brochure,
  • Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and
  • FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.
