Personal Protection Outside the Home

Pre-requisite: 21 years old with proof of shooting experience.

Students take this course to learn how to identify potential confrontations and how to avoid them….  If those strategies fail, students learn how to safely, effectively, and responsibly use a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.   Students also learn about the law-abiding person’s right to self-defense and the statutes surrounding those rights.  Basic PPOTH (Level 1) is an 8 hour course taking place in the classroom and at the range where students will shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.  Advanced PPOTH (Level 2) is a 5 hour course which takes place entirely at the range involving approximately 115 rounds of ammunition.

Learning objectives include:

  • basic defensive shooting skills,
  • strategies for safety and response to violent confrontation outside the home,
  • firearms and the law,
  • selecting a handgun for self-defense, and
  • opportunities for skill development.

Course materials include:

  • NRA’s Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home handbook,
  • NRA’s Gun Safety Rules brochure,
  • Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Booklet, and
  • the appropriate course completion certificate(s).

Acceptable proof of shooting skills includes:

  • NRA Personal Protection In the Home Course certification,
  • NRA Basic Pistol Course certification,
  • NRA FIRST Steps Course certification,
  • NRA Pistol Competitive Shooting Qualification card,
  • military DD214 w/ pistol qualification,
  • passing a pre-course assessment which includes the demonstration of basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing a firearm,  cleaning a firearm to the instructor, & passage of the PPITH exam scoring 80% or better, or
  • the discretion of the firearms instructor.

Students must be qualified to possess and/or carry a firearm to take this course as defined by local, state, and federal laws.  They must be of good repute and able to understand basic legal concepts involved in concealed carry and self defense.  Students must know and apply the basic rules of gun safety during training – students who will not or cannot do so will be asked to leave without refund.
